With Smart Charging, Tibber automatically charges your electric car at the most suitable times. Which charging features are available depends on your Tibber energy contract, solar panels and connected devices.
What charging options are available?
Tibber offers three charging options, depending on your setup.
Solar Charging
If you have solar panels but no Tibber energy contract, you can use Solar Charging to charge your car with excess solar energy.
Your car charges when enough surplus solar energy is available and automatically pauses when there isn't enough.
To use Solar Charging, you'll need:
- A Tibber Pulse.
- A compatible, connected car and EV charger.
- Solar panels producing surplus electricity.
Solar Charging doesn't use a departure time to schedule charging. If you need to charge immediately, select Charge Now.
Smart Charging
If you have a Tibber energy contract, Smart Charging can automatically charge your car during the cheapest available hours.
You set:
- Your departure time.
- Your desired battery level.
Tibber then schedules charging based on electricity prices and the time available before departure.
Smart Charging with solar energy
If you have both a Tibber energy contract and solar panels, you can combine Smart Charging with solar energy.
Tibber considers:
- Your solar energy production.
- Real-time consumption data from Tibber Pulse.
- Dynamic electricity prices.
- Your departure time.
- Your desired battery level.
The goal is to use as much of your own solar energy as possible while keeping charging costs low.
If there isn't enough solar energy available, Tibber can also charge your car from the grid during cheaper hours.
Which charging option is right for me?
| Your setup | Charging option |
|---|---|
| Solar panels, without a Tibber energy contract | Solar Charging |
| Tibber energy contract | Smart Charging |
| Tibber energy contract and solar panels | Smart Charging with solar energy |
Availability also depends on your car and EV charger compatibility.
How does Smart Charging work?
When you plug in your car, Tibber automatically calculates when to charge.
The charging schedule considers:
- Current electricity prices and price forecasts.
- The charging power of your car or EV charger.
- Your scheduled departure time.
- Your desired battery level.
Tibber then plans charging to help you reach your desired battery level before departure at the lowest possible cost.
Charge Now
Need to charge immediately instead of waiting for your scheduled charging session?
Select Charge Now in the Tibber app.
Your car will start charging without following the Smart Charging schedule.
This is especially useful when using Solar Charging and you need to charge regardless of how much solar energy is available.
Why isn't my car charging during the cheapest hours?
Smart Charging doesn't just look at tonight's electricity prices. It considers known prices and forecasts for the next 7 days.
If Tibber expects lower prices later, charging may be postponed by one or more days.
This helps reduce charging costs over a longer period.
Important: If you haven't set a departure time, charging could continue to be postponed.
We recommend setting at least one departure time per week so Tibber knows when your car needs to be charged.
Supported cars and EV chargers
Tibber supports Smart Charging with a wide range of electric cars and EV chargers.
