Your electricity bill depends on your energy contract, electricity consumption and the billing method used in your country.
Depending on your market and tariff, you may pay for your actual electricity consumption each month or make fixed monthly payments that are reconciled against your actual costs later.
How is my electricity bill calculated?
There are two main billing methods:
Paying for actual consumption
You pay for the electricity you've used during the billing period. Your bill is generally calculated using:
- Your actual electricity consumption.
- The electricity prices applicable to your contract.
- Any additional charges per kWh.
Your monthly bill may vary depending on how much electricity you use and when you use it.
Fixed monthly payments
With fixed monthly payments, you pay a set amount based on your estimated annual electricity consumption.
Your payments are reconciled against your actual costs in a settlement bill. Depending on your consumption and payments, you may receive a refund or need to pay the difference.
In Germany, for example, Smart Dynamic offers fixed monthly payments or billing based on actual consumption, while Simple Fix uses fixed monthly payments with a guaranteed electricity price for 12 months.
How is my consumption measured?
This depends on your electricity meter and the billing rules in your market.
With a smart meter
Your electricity consumption is measured automatically. Depending on your market and contract, consumption may be billed using hourly or 15-minute electricity prices.
This means the cost of your electricity depends on both how much you use and when you use it.
Without a smart meter
Your consumption may be calculated using meter readings and an estimated consumption profile.
For example, in Germany, customers without a smart meter are billed using a monthly average market price weighted by a standard load profile.
If meter readings aren't available, your consumption may be estimated and corrected when new readings are received.
Can I change my monthly payment?
If your contract uses fixed monthly payments, you may be able to adjust the amount in the Tibber app.
In Germany, you can tap the monthly payment icon on the home screen and select a new amount.
Available options depend on your market and tariff.
Can I switch to paying for actual consumption?
This depends on your contract.
In Germany, customers with Smart Dynamic can switch from fixed monthly payments to billing based on actual consumption.
- With a smart meter: Go to You → Electricity contract → Billing method in the Tibber app.
- Without a smart meter: Contact Support to request the change.
Please note: In Germany, this change can't be reversed. Once you've switched to consumption-based billing, you can't return to fixed monthly payments.
Customers with Simple Fix can't switch to consumption-based billing.
Can I see my next bill?
You can follow your electricity consumption and costs in the Tibber app.
If you pay for actual consumption: Go to Analysis to see your consumption, costs so far and electricity price development. This gives you an estimate of your next bill.
If you make fixed monthly payments: Your next payment amount is already set. Where available, you can use the monthly payment overview to check whether your payments still match your actual electricity costs.
