Your energy costs include more than just the price of electricity or gas. Depending on your country, you may also pay taxes, grid fees and other charges. These are set by governments, grid operators or other relevant authorities, rather than Tibber.
Which costs are included?
Depending on your market, your energy costs may include:
- Energy taxes: Taxes charged on the energy you consume.
- VAT: Value-added tax applied to energy and other applicable charges.
- Grid fees: Costs for transporting energy to your home and maintaining the energy network.
- Fixed fees: Charges that don't depend on how much energy you use.
Not all these costs are necessarily included on your Tibber invoice. Some may be billed separately.
What are energy taxes?
Energy taxes are set by the government and may depend on your energy consumption, connection type or other local regulations.
Some countries also offer tax reductions or allowances that are automatically applied to eligible customers.
The applicable rates and reductions vary by market.
What are grid fees?
Grid fees cover the transport of electricity or gas to your home and the maintenance of the energy network.
These fees are determined by your grid operator and may depend on:
- Your connection type.
- Your energy consumption.
- Your highest electricity demand during certain periods.
- Fixed charges set by the grid operator.
In some countries, grid fees are included on your Tibber invoice. In others, you receive a separate invoice from your grid operator.
What are capacity-based grid fees?
Some grid operators charge fees based on how much electricity you use at the same time, rather than only on your total consumption.
These are often called capacity-based or demand-based grid fees.
If your grid operator uses this model, spreading your electricity consumption throughout the day may help reduce high demand peaks.
Why do these costs change?
Taxes and grid fees can change when governments or grid operators update their rates.
Tibber doesn't determine these charges, but applicable changes may be reflected in your energy costs.
Do I pay these costs if I use little energy?
Yes. Some charges are fixed and don't depend on your energy consumption.
This means you may still pay certain fees even when you use very little or no energy during a billing period.
Where can I find these costs?
Check the breakdown of your Tibber invoice to see which taxes and fees are included.
If your grid operator bills you separately, you'll find those charges on their invoice instead.
