With a dynamic electricity contract, electricity prices can sometimes become negative. This happens when more electricity is produced than consumed, for example on sunny or windy days.
Do I still pay for electricity?
Not necessarily. Even when the wholesale electricity price is negative, taxes, grid fees and other charges may still apply.
This means the total price you pay for electricity can remain positive, even when the market price falls below zero.
Can I get paid to use electricity?
Yes, if your total electricity price becomes negative.
However, this doesn't necessarily mean you'll receive a separate payment. Negative electricity costs may instead reduce your overall energy bill.
During these periods, it can be beneficial to use energy-intensive devices, such as:
- Electric cars.
- Heat pumps.
- Home batteries.
Important: Whether you benefit directly from negative prices depends on your contract and billing arrangement. If your consumption is billed using an average price rather than interval-based prices, shifting your consumption to negative-price periods may not reduce your costs.
What happens when I export electricity?
If you have solar panels and export electricity to the grid, negative market prices may also affect your export compensation.
Depending on your market and export agreement:
- Your compensation may decrease.
- You may receive no compensation during negative-price periods.
- You may be charged for exporting electricity when market prices are negative.
How can I check for negative electricity prices?
Electricity prices for the following day are generally published around 13:00.
You can find current and upcoming electricity prices in the Tibber app and on the Tibber website.
If you use Smart Charging, a home battery or other supported smart devices, Tibber may automatically optimise their energy usage based on electricity prices and your settings.
How do negative prices affect my contract?
The impact of negative electricity prices depends on your market, tariff, meter and billing arrangement.
