Is your car charging during more expensive hours, or is charging paused when electricity is cheap? It may seem confusing, but this is often exactly how Grid Rewards works.
Tibber temporarily adjusts your Smart Charging schedule to help balance the electricity grid. You receive a reward for participating, and any additional charging costs are compensated.
Why is my charging schedule adjusted?
Electricity prices are set in advance based on expected supply and demand. Actual conditions can change, for example due to changes in solar and wind production or unexpected peaks in electricity consumption.
Grid Rewards helps balance these differences by temporarily adjusting charging.
In your Smart Charging schedule, you'll see two types of Grid Rewards events:
- Green bars: Tibber starts or increases charging when the grid needs more electricity consumption.
- Orange bars: Tibber temporarily pauses charging and moves it to another time.
Why does my car charge during expensive hours?
Sometimes the electricity grid needs additional consumption when electricity prices are higher.
Grid Rewards may then start charging earlier or move it to another time.
We compare the costs with your original Smart Charging schedule:
- You receive compensation if the new charging time is more expensive.
- You also receive an additional Grid Rewards reward.
This means a completed session costs less overall than Smart Charging alone.
Why is charging paused during cheap hours?
Even during cheap hours, there may be a temporary shortage of available electricity.
Grid Rewards may pause charging to help balance the grid.
You receive a reward for the pause. Charging resumes later, and if it takes place during a more expensive period, you receive price compensation.
Why do I see a higher electricity price?
During a Grid Rewards session, the electricity price shown in the app may differ from the price you ultimately pay.
That's because price compensation is calculated after the charging session has ended.
The price shown during the session isn't necessarily your final charging price.
Where can I find my reward?
The Grid Rewards overview shows the additional reward you receive for participating.
Price compensation for a rescheduled charging session isn't displayed separately in this overview.
After the session ends, you'll find the final costs in your charging session summary. These take into account:
- The cost of the electricity used.
- Any price compensation.
- The additional Grid Rewards reward.
It may take approximately one hour for all information to appear.
What happens if I unplug my car?
If you unplug your car before postponed charging has been completed, you may lose your price compensation.
If you reconnect within four hours, the compensation may still be restored.
Avoid interrupting a Grid Rewards session unnecessarily, for example by turning off Smart Charging or unplugging your car.
Will my car be charged on time?
Grid Rewards takes your departure time and desired battery level into account.
Make sure that:
- Your departure time is correct.
- Your desired battery level is achievable.
- Your car has enough time to charge.
This allows Tibber to adjust charging while keeping your planned departure in mind.
Grid Rewards isn't working as expected
Check that:
- Smart Charging is enabled.
- Your car supports Grid Rewards.
- Your car is correctly connected to the Tibber app.
- Your departure time and desired battery level are set correctly.
