With Smart Charging with solar energy, Tibber automatically charges your electric car using as much electricity from your own solar panels as possible. It also considers your departure time, desired battery level, expected solar production and electricity prices.
This feature is available in supported markets and requires a Tibber energy contract.
How does it work?
Smart Charging with solar energy builds on Smart Charging. When planning a charging session, Tibber considers:
- Your scheduled departure time.
- Your desired battery level.
- How much energy your car needs.
- The expected charging speed.
- Forecast solar production.
- Electricity prices.
This helps Tibber use as much of your own solar energy as possible while getting your car ready for departure.
If there isn't enough solar energy, Tibber can also charge during cheaper electricity hours.
For the best results, we recommend setting at least one departure time every three days.
What do I need?
To use Smart Charging with solar energy, you'll need:
- A Tibber energy contract.
- Solar panels with production data available in the Tibber app.
- A compatible, connected car or EV charger.
A Tibber Pulse isn't required, but it helps make charging more accurate.
Does it work without Tibber Pulse?
Yes. Without Pulse, Tibber plans charging using weather forecasts, historical solar production and your car's expected energy needs.
With Pulse, Tibber can use real-time electricity consumption and solar production data to adjust the charging schedule when conditions change.
Why does my car sometimes charge at night?
Smart Charging with solar energy prioritizes your own solar production, but it also considers when your car needs to be ready.
If there isn't enough solar energy available, Tibber may schedule charging during cheaper hours at night to help your car reach its desired battery level before departure.
Why does my car sometimes charge on one phase?
Some EV chargers support automatic switching between one-phase and three-phase charging.
Charging on one phase allows your car to charge at a lower power level, which can help make use of smaller amounts of available solar energy.
When more power becomes available, compatible chargers can switch back to three-phase charging.
Not all EV chargers support this feature. Check Supported EV chargers for compatibility.
Smart Charging with solar energy isn't working
Check that:
- Smart Charging with solar energy is enabled.
- Your car or EV charger is connected to Tibber.
- Your solar production is visible in the Tibber app.
