Q&A for Zaptec

Updated over a week ago

Load balancing doesn't work?

The most common reason for Loadbalancing not working on Zaptec is that the values under Manual power control is greyed out. This will cause load balancing not to work on the charger. The fix is to type in the correct max values in the fields and then hit save. After this load balancing should work just fine.

To find it, enter the Zaptec Portal, and then enter the Installation itself by clicking on the address in the top left corner.

Find the field titled "Manual power control" enter the values and click "Save".

Other reasons why load balancing might not work on Zaptec:

  • ECO-mode is turned on.

Solution: Turn off ECO-mode for the charger.

  • Charger is in stand alone-mode.

    Solution: Turn off stand-alone.

  • If the charger has priority current active.

Solution: Remove the value that is set under "Priority current".

  • If charging mode is set to "Scheduled power control" or "Zaptec APM".

Solution: Set the charging mode to "Manual power control".

Can I use preheating with Zaptec?

Not with smart charging, as long as the car is not finished charging and charging has been postponed by smart charging.

If the car is fully charged, and has let the charger know about this, the charger will offer maximum current when departure is near and the car will preheat using energy from the charger, rather than the battery.

If the car is not fully charged, and charging has been postponed, the charger is not offering a current for the car to use to preheat. This will either cause the car to preheat using energy from the battery or not preheat the cabin at all. (Depending on model)

Solution:

Pause or turn off smart charging when you want to preheat your car's cabin.

My Zaptec is connected as 3-phase charger on an IT-grid and now my car doesn't charge properly.

It is not recommended to install Zaptec-chargers as 3-phase if you have a 230V IT-grid.

The reason for this is that very few cars support this way of charging, and it can cause issues with charging.

Some cars, especially hybrids and older EV's, only charge on 1-phase, while others charge asymmetrically, causing uneven loads on the phases.

In some instances, it may also void the warranty on your car and charger, so you really shouldn't do it.

If your charger is configured as 3-phase IT, you should contact an installer to re-wire it or use a 1-phase charging cable.

The only cars that fully support 3-phase IT-charging are Tesla Model 3 and Y.

I keep getting a red light on my charger and an error message about "Over current"

Over current is caused by the vehicle trying to draw more current than the charger is currently offering.

After a few seconds, the charger will enter "error-mode" to prevent damage and stop supplying power.

Most common on setups where the charger is configured with 3-phase IT-grid, and a car that doesn't fully support 3-phase charging on IT-grids. (This is not a recommended setup by Zaptec)

The issue may the emphasised if you are using Peak Control due to the car charging asymmetrically and not adjusting properly when the current is turned down by Peak control.

When using Peak Control, an over current can also be triggered even if the charger is configured to 1-phase if the fuse size is 25A or less.

Solution: Contact your installer and ask them to re-wire the charger to 1-phase or buy a 1-phase charging cable.

If you are using a Schuko-adapter the max charge current must not exceed 10A.

My Zaptec always charges for a minute when I connect the cable even if there are high electricity prices.

This is expected behaviour.

Due to a change in Zaptec's cloud-system, we have imposed a 1-minute wait before we attempt to pause charging.

This wait will ensure that our stop-command is forwarded from Zaptec Cloud to the charger.

I can't add my new charger to the Zaptec-app, the QR-code doesn't work/is missing.

If you are unable to scan the QR-code at the bottom of the charger when trying to register the charger to your Zaptec-account/app, you must contact Zaptec-support and send them the serial number of your charger. Zaptec support will generate a new QR-code you can use.

"You don't own any installations" when trying to pair the Zaptec-charger to Tibber?

If you are receiving this error when you try to pair your charger to Tibber, it is most likely caused by Tibber already having access in the Zaptec-portal.

You can delete the permission for Tibber in the portal, by going to "Permissions" in the Zaptec webportal.

I have a Zaptec Pro that is connected to my apartment complex' system. How can I add this to my Tibber-app?

You can't. Smart charging with Tibber only supports stand-alone chargers, and we can not control chargers that are in a system with other chargers as this may disrupt charging for everyone on that same system.

For example, parking garages in apartment complexes or mutual parking spaces.

If you have a Zaptec Pro that is stand-alone and connected to your own electricty meter/main fuse, you need to contact Zaptec-support first, so that they can change the installation-type from "Pro" to "Home" before you can pair it to Tibber.
